The AFRICARE-WHICO Community Services provides a leadership role in
health and community services programs and policy development
for the rural poor underserved communities in Africa. This involves
working in partnership with a number of key stakeholders including
regional rural communities, local, state and federal governments,
agencies, community organizations, professional associations,
post-secondary educational institutions, unions, consumers and
other government departments.
AFRICARE-WHICO provides support services to rural communities in Africa;
we are currently in Nimo, Enugwu Ukwu and Awka communities.
The actual delivery of programs and services including Health
Promotion, Disease Prevention, Child, Youth and Family Services
and Community medicine clinics. Continuing Care is provided
by member community health agencies. AFRICARE-WHICO provides free clinics
and free medications to persons in underserved rural communities.
AFRICARE-WHICO total projected budget allocation for the areas we are
currently serving is about $1.2 million which will go to support
the operational logistics and about 60 physicians and nurses
who will receive stipends for their service including 20 persons
that will be on permanent staff receiving fixed salaries.
Over the past year AFRICARE-WHICO has been reorganized to receive more
efficient input into policy and program development and supports
to boards and agencies. There are currently 25 full time positions
available in the new organization. The organizational structure
will comprise of five branches as follows:
The Board of Trustee provides overall relations and
advisory with the government and agencies, the co-ordination
of their service, the identification of service quality improvements,
and has program responsibility for oversight of services in
the AFRICARE-WHICO registered communities.
The Program and Program Services branch provides the
overall policy and program development functions of AFRICARE-WHICO, strategic
planning for the health and community services system, and applied
research and evaluation activities.
The Government & Agency Relations has extensive
involvement with intergovernmental activity at the federal-provincial
levels, legislative and regulation review responsibility as
well as interaction with the many professional associations,
voluntary and consumer advocacy groups active in the health
and community services sector in the communities.

The Support Services branch is responsible for the overall
administrative, financial, human resource, claims management
and information management services of the AFRICARE-WHICO, including
all financial arrangements with, and financial monitoring of,
government-funded regional health Services.
The Medical Services branch is responsible for the AFRICARE-WHICO's
mandate to deal with issues of physicians and physician related
services as it relates to the provision of medical services,
disease control and management, environmental health and pharmaceutical
services. Responsible for advising AFRICARE-WHICO on all issues related
to services and medical related services. Responsible for development
of alternate delivery models of care for physician services.
Responsible for medical services negotiations on behalf of AFRICARE-WHICO
and registered Community Services.
